Novelty Birthday Cakes That Go Wonky?

Novelty Birthday Cake R2-D2…Hmmmm

Have you ever experienced the shock and horror of making a terrific novelty-birthday-cake and have it not go quite ‘to plan’?

I know of many friends who decided to make a terrific novelty birthday cake for their son or daughter’s birthday and everything went pear shape at the last minute.

Just like when you are outside and want to light birthday candles on the cake, a wind is blowing and you can’t light the candles, no matter what! That is a journey of discovery I encountered at our last birthay party, and why I now pack sparklers just in case!

Have you ever seen or experienced a cake blooper?. You reflect upon it and realise it was really very entertaining?

I made an awesome cake once using fancy fondant icing, I was so surprised and proud of it. It took me ages to add coloring to the icing to make it just the right shade I wanted, then to roll it out and smooth it over the cake adding other little fondant embellishments and letters on top as well.

I finished my cake around one o’clock in the morning and in an exhausted fashion. I quickly cleaned up, and made a home for my precious cake in some tupparware with a lid. I wanted to make sure my kids would not poke their fingers all over my wonderful creation, plus it would be ready to travel to its location.

I have to confess I was feeling very proud of myself. The incredible cake making was complete, and it looked amazing. I delicately and carefully packed it all up nicely ready to carry in the car to my friend’s house the next day. I was feeling like the queen of cakes. I think Nigella would be proud.

I got up, had breakfast, got the kids ready for school, dropped them off, did another errand and then took my cake to its celebration location.

I walked proudly into the house with my cake, beaming at the excitement of showing my friends and having them lavish me with ‘cake praise’. We gathered around with our hot teas and coffee ready for the unveiling of my cake and our morning tea to begin.

I was excited, my friends were excited. The lid was lifted off – and what did we see….ok well to be honest words probably cannot fully describe the site that was before our eyes – as it was NOT great….imagine looking not at a beatuiful and serene fondant cake – but a mush of slimy and shiny icing amidst some resembalance of a cake!

The lovely fondant icing apparantly needed to be laid out to dry and firm up, but I placed it in a air tight container and it sweated (I call it melted) and turned into a mushy slushy icing mess.

So what did we do? We glanced quickly at one another and burst out laughing!

We had a gasp, a giggle, and with no other chocolate option, ate the delicious but not so visually good looking cake anyway.

Let me ask you, what is more wonderful in life than great friends and cake?.

Have you ever had a novelty cake disaster that you were able to turn around to be a success one way or another? I think the secret to all of it is to keep your sense of humor, laugh, cry, get creative and be persistent…yummy cakes are so worth it!

Happy Caking and Cake Making!
