Dos And Don’ts Of Funny Groom Speeches

Groom speeches are traditionally not. In fact, these are considered as the most serious of all wedding speeches. Nevertheless, many people appreciate funny groom speeches as these tend to hold the attention of the audience a while longer than the serious ones. But how do you turn a serious speech into a funny one? Here are the dos and don’ts.

Do use some funny stories. Nearly everyone of us have experienced funny things that we could share to others. It is, thus, possible that you have your own stories to share. So share your stories. While not everybody will laugh at your joke, it is likely that a really funny, well-delivered joke will give some people in your audience some good reasons to laugh. Be careful to choose jokes and funny stories that are in good taste though. Don’t just say a joke, choose discriminately the ones that won’t make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Do use an entertaining one liner. There are a lot of hilarious one-liners online which you can use. But, when picking up a one liner, be sure to find those that are not common and already abused. A very common one liner would fail to make people laugh for a simple reason – they already know what it is even before you finish delivering your lines. Also, stay away from sexual references – leave that to your best man – and things that talk of the same thing.

Prepare the audience for the punch line. Grooms usually make the mistake of saying the punch line without building enough momentum first. Mostly, the fault stems from the anxiety of the groom to deliver the line. The fault lies in the nature of the groom as well; if he’s not naturally funny, he probably has no knack for judging the right time to crack the punch line. Be natural and you’ll surely make your crowd fall off their tripods.

Be innovative. Give your listeners something innovative. If the crowd feels that your speech is sounds a bit generic they’d probably prefer to listen to something else. So add some embellishments to your speech. There is nothing wrong with using materials that are unconventional.

Do add a new twist to old jokes. Old jokes can still entertain your audience. One that usually makes people get a good laugh is the joke where the groom reads the introduction of his speech, rips it off, and say that it was the speech from his previous marriage. If you feel that the guests would buy this, crack it. If not, get another one.

Don’t present an invented anecdote as if it truly happened. If you want to make it sound only like a joke, it’s fine that you make up one. But, once you treat it like it happened in real life, it is best that you abandon the idea and just pick a real one. People in the crowd will know in one way or another whether the funny anecdote is real or not, so it’s best that you keep yourself from inventing one.

Don’t try too hard to be a comedian. Don’t overdo it if you’re trying to be funny. It is not your job to be funny and funny groom speeches are delivered basically only to make the crowd get a good laugh as the serious speech drags on.
