A Card Trick That Is Easy Enough For Anyone To Perform

Performing magic using a simple deck of cards is probably one of the easiest forms of magic that even children can do. This is the perfect trick for children. The only thing they need to do is to know some maths. This can be done with fantastic results so long as it is practiced over and over again.  

The first thing to do: 

Using a standard poker card deck with 52 cards you will begin by telling your audience that you are going to make a few piles of cards. Shuffle the cards. Holding the cards face up in your hand, the top card which is the first card of each pile is where you begin. Number the piles from one to thirteen, ace being the number one card. It will take a different amount of cards to reach thirteen because it depends on what the starting card is. Make a pile of cards starting with an ace and be sure there are thirteen cards in the pile. Keep in mind that the suits do not matter; lets say the first card is a two, count the next card as three, and then four and so on until you have reached the number thirteen card. When the initial card is a ten then the next card will be eleven, then twelve followed by thirteen to complete the pile. There will be a total of only four cards in this pile. Do all the counting to yourself. Lay the cards down in piles face up and when you have finished with all the piles turn them over carefully so the first card you laid down is on top of the pile.

And now for the finesse:

When counting pretend to concentrate on making piles, do not get caught or it will ruin the magic. You cannot start a pile with face cards. If your first card is a face card just say, “I don’t like face cards” and put it on the bottom of the deck or slide in the deck anywhere. Look at the cards in you are handling face up while you are counting out the piles in front of you. When you come to the end of the deck the remaining cards in your hand will probably not be enough cards to make a full pile. Because the remaining cards will not make a pile of thirteen they have to be put aside and not mixed in with the rest. Just say, “I have enough cards already” and place the rest safely aside. Be careful to count correctly as the trick depends on the math.

Next piece of the trick:

There will be seven piles of cards in front of you approximately. It does not matter how many piles you have. Get the people to take the piles and hand them to you one by one. They will pass you the cards they choose and as they do this put the cards set aside face down in your hand. Add the piles they hand to you to the cards in your hand. When there are six piles you must let them remove three whole piles and when you have seven piles get them to move 4 of them away. Be sure there are always three piles left. Even if you tell them to leave three piles on the table it will still work.

This part is fun:

Let the people flip over the card on the top of any two piles to reveal what is there. The faces on the top cards of two piles are now facing up. What you want to do is find the number that is on top of the pile so search the deck. You will not know the suit, just the number of the card so do not forget to tell them this. More showmanship is here. Without looking like you are counting your cards but merely sifting through the cards in your hand looking at them one by one as if you were searching for the right number. You are in fact counting the cards. The first thing to do is count ten of the cards. Next read out the number on the starting card that is facing up on one of the piles of cards. Look at the second card faced up and count to that number. So, if you had a two and a three turned over on the two piles you will be counting out the ten cards, then two and then three more cards from the turned over cards.  

The big finale: 

Now you have some cards left in your hand. It wont matter whether you have one card or ten cards left in your hands. Do not get caught placing down the left over cards, pretend to count them and state, “This must be your card.” The number of the top card on the last pile is “.” While counting off the remaining cards you will say the remaining number of cards. Call it and say it is an Ace when there is just the one card remaining. Depending on the number of cards left you will proclaim that their number was equal to the number of remaining cards. To create a shock let the audience flip over the final card and read the number for themselves.  

Final thoughts:

As long as you have counted correctly this trick never fails.

When turning the piles over keep an eye on the first cards on the top of each pile, do not let them be misplaced.

You have to start with 52 cards for it to work.
