DRESSED TO THRILL:

Did you know that costume parties were considered scandalous in Britain for a long time, because people associated them with debauchery and decadence? In the US, however, costumes and fancy dresses have had a fairly successful run, primarily because of the huge popularity of Halloween and pantomimes. Some of my best childhood memories are of Halloween costume parties, where I think I pretty much covered the pantheon of superheroes. The best part is that costumes are still an integral part of our Halloween, though we’ve grown too old for trick-or-treating rituals. In the West, costume parties are most likely to have originated in Britain. The masked balls of the 18th century were perhaps the first costume parties. The Victorians introduced fancy dress parties, which then grew in popularity. In modern times, both in Britain and in the US, costumes have become the life of most modern parties. So many of our favorite scenes from films involve costume parties, don’t they? Remember Mean Girls, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Birdcage?

Scary or funny?

No wonder then that costumes and fancy dresses have become a big industry to cater to the demands of the people. There are two main reactions you would want to elicit from people when you decide to turn out in a costume. You either want to scare them, or make them laugh. As a result, the most popular costumes are those of characters from horror movies and comedies. Dracula is a perennial favorite, as are Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. Of late, there is quite a rage about TV shows, such as Friends.

Pick and choose

So how do you get yourself a fancy dress? First, of course, you must decide what you want to turn up as, after carefully considering the theme of the party. Once you’ve done that, you have two options. You can drive down to a good costume store and try out a few and finally choose one. Who knows, while at the store, you might feel so taken with a particular dress that you might give up your original costume idea altogether. Your second option would be look for a dress online, from among the many sites that offer party dresses. Though this is evidently the simpler choice, it could turn out to be more complicated than it looks. Especially if your dress arrives late, or if you find that it fits badly or is made of sub-standard material, or that it is not how you had imagined it to be. It’s not for nothing that they say, seeing is believing.

Make your own

Of course, you could put together your own fancy dress ensemble. This is particularly useful for pantomimes, where you can make Robin Hood outfits out of old leggings, adding trimmings to leather jackets and feathers to old berets. If you happen to possess some needlework skills as well, you can give old dresses or costumes a whole new twist and casually slip into a brand-new persona without spending more than a few cents. Now how’s that —- self-made costumes —- for a new party idea?
